A criminal known as Lebanese has a dream: to conquer the underworld of Rome. To carry out this feat without precedent he puts together a ruthless and highly organized gang. Their progress and changes in leadership take place over twenty-five years, from the 1970's into the '90's, and are inseparably intertwined with the dark history of modern Italy: terrorism, kidnappings and corruption at the highest levels of government.

Massimo is a graduate in mathematics who, after winning a Totocalcio board, buys the BarLume and becomes the surly barman. Invariably Massimo finds himself investigating, in every episode, some crimes that take place in his town on the Tuscan Riviera, Pineta, collaborating with the Police commissioner Vittoria Fusco. His instinct as a detective always finds inspiration in some conversations, which is forced to sit in his bar, by four old-fashioned old men: his uncle Ampelio (later replaced by his former father-in-law Emo), Pilade, Gino and Aldo. Massimo is also the boss of Tiziana, the handsome and prosperous waitress of BarLume, the erotic dream of everyone.

Police Inspector Petra Delicato works in the archive department of the Genoa Flying Squad. That is, until the day in which, due to staff shortage, she is assigned her first operational case. She finds herself working alongside the Police Constable Antonio Monte, an old-fashioned, middle-aged man with a rational mind. The polite, old-school widower and the direct, unconventional, two-times divorcee find themselves catapulted into a new world and working together on different cases: a horrific series of rapes in the old city alleyways, the illegal trade of fighting dogs, the strict and harsh world of religious sects, the darkest secrets of the world of television. The crime series is inspired by the character of Detective Petra Delicado, conceived by Spanish author Alicia Giménez Bartlett, but takes place in the Italian city of Genova, instead of the original Barcelona.

Vincenzo Palmieri, a student of the famous Commissioner Rizzo "Piedone", returns to Naples to face his past. He must earn the trust of his new team and demonstrate the effectiveness of his unconventional methods in a complex city. Commissioner Sonia Ascarelli, his opposite, will give him a hard time. Between investigations full of twists and turns and light-hearted moments, Vincenzo will try to reconcile himself with his inner demons, while Naples continues to offer valuable life lessons.
