Georgia works as a gynaecologist in a hospital in Rome. Her team consists of two male doctors and four male and female nurses, with whom she gets on very well. One day she insist on taking in Benedetta, a pregnant drug addict, although everyone else is against the decision. Georgia and her husband are very happy when she finds out that she's expecting a baby. But during a fight between the drug addict and her dealer, Georgia tries to help and loses her baby. Benedetta shares the room with Anna, a woman who can't have children. Initially they do not like each other but when they get to know one another they become friends. Finally Benedetta allows Anna and her husband to adopt the child which she didn't desire.

As the 1950s draw to a close, Sicily is a place of extreme poverty and underdevelopment. Vito, the Licata family's eldest son, decides to move to a small town in Liguria, in the northwest of Italy. He and his family leave to seek their fortune in the hope of ensuring a more dignified life for his mother and siblings. It is a multifaceted series about the pursuit of hope and redemption in a world that fears anything which is different or diverse.

The series revolves around the adventures of an extended family, made up by Giulio, widower and father of three boys, and Lucia, divorced and mother of two girls.
