A prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series, the show follows the crew of the USS Enterprise under Captain Christopher Pike.

Alex Kurtzman, co-writer and producer of 2009's "Star Trek" and sequel "Star Trek Into Darkness," will executive produce the series alongside Heather Kadin, with whom Kurtzman executive produces on CBS dramas "Scorpion" and "Limitless." The updated series will introduce new characters "seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966," reads the press release.

Set 300 years in the future, the series follows the adventures of the Orville, a not-so-top-of-the-line exploratory ship in Earth's interstellar fleet. Facing cosmic challenges from without and within, this motley crew of space explorers will boldly go where no comedic drama has gone before.

The series is set 18 years after Jean-Luc Picard's last appearance in Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) and finds the character deeply affected by the destruction of Romulus as depicted in the film Star Trek (2009).
