Homicide for the HolidaysHomicide for the Holidays
Oxygen, 2016 Running | Drama, Crime, Documentary
Rating: 4.3/5

The holiday season between Thanksgiving and New Year's is often thought of as a celebratory period to spend time with friends and family. That is not always the case, though, as the period is not immune from experiencing the same types of violent crimes that occur throughout the year. This series documents stories of tragedy that struck during the holidays, with firsthand accounts from people who had friends or family members killed during the joyous time. Sometimes the victim is killed by someone close to them, such as a case of sibling rivalry turned deadly, but sometimes the killing is done by a stranger who interrupts a holiday gathering with gunfire.

In 2018, a nearly 200-year-old Catholic school, located in the heart of a neighborhood rife with gun violence and grinding socioeconomic challenges, became a source of both immense pride and then searing controversy as the school's football team, the Panthers, were expelled from their private school league for being "too good" - a turn of events that raised questions of racial bias. Finding themselves without a league in which to play, the team made its own schedule, barnstorming the country in search of top competition and the chance to showcase its players as they strove for athletic scholarships.

Warriors of Liberty City explores Liberty City - a crime-ridden neighborhood in Miami, Florida that is arguably the NFL's largest football factory. The series follows a season with the Liberty City Warriors, a youth football program founded by an unlikely mentor: Luther Campbell, better known as "Uncle Luke" from the 2 Live Crew. Before Moonlight shook the Oscars, Liberty City was best known for some of the biggest names in football, including Devonta Freeman, Antonio Brown, Duke Johnson and Teddy Bridgewater. But it's also a place synonymous with poverty and gun violence, and even more disturbing, in Liberty City, it's now kids killing kids. Yet in the face of trauma and tragedy, football legends are born.
