The show's first season is set in Louisiana and follows a pair of Louisiana State Police homicide detectives (McConaughey and Harrelson), and their pursuit of a serial killer over the course of seventeen years.

Black Bird
Black Bird centers on James Keene. Keene was a young Chicago kid who was a standout football player headed for a pro career when a few turns in the wrong direction caught him a decade-long prison sentence with no chance of parole. The son of a Chicago cop was offered by the prosecutor who put him behind bars the chance to be sprung from prison and a chance to redeem himself. The stakes were high. Same prosecutor convicted a man named Larry Hall for abducting and killing a 15-year-old, just one of perhaps 19 other women he killed. The killer could be released on appeal. Keene's task was to ingratiate himself with the murderer, in prison, and get him to confess to two murders.
Prodigal Son
Prodigal Son, from executive producers Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter, follows Malcolm Bright, whose gift gives him the ability to know how killers think. Back in the '90s, his father was a notorious serial killer called "The Surgeon." That's why Bright is the best criminal psychologist around; murder is the family business. Bright uses his twisted genius to help the NYPD solve crimes and stop killers, all while dealing with a manipulative mother, annoyingly normal sister, a homicidal father still looking to bond with his prodigal son, and his own constantly evolving neuroses.

When they discover that these are not the only girls who have disappeared in the area, they must race against the clock to stop the killer before another woman is taken.

The series explores how the FBI caught infamous criminal masterminds, with each closed-ended season following a different case. The first season focuses on the FBI agent, a highly specialized linguist, who using unconventional means brought Ted Kaczynski, aka the "Unabomber," to justice after nearly a 20-year manhunt. The show, said to be heavily serialized and darkly psychological in the vein of True Detective,would provide insight into the criminal and the case but also the psychological effects the cases have on the FBI agents assigned to hunt down the most dangerous criminals who often delve into a kind of madness of their own, becoming totally absorbed in the crimes and forced to live inside the darkest minds imaginable for years.
Instinct
This series centers on a former CIA operative (Alan Cumming) who has since built a "normal" life as a gifted professor and writer but is pulled back into his old life when the NYPD needs his help to stop a serial killer on the loose.
