The story of a mysterious taxi service that takes revenge on behalf of victims who are unable to get justice from the law. There are many taxi cabs in New York City, but only ONE pays the passengers. Ben Bailey quizzes unsuspecting passengers until they reach their destination. If they answer correctly, they will earn money, but if they answer three questions incorrectly, that is "three strikes", and they will be kicked out of the cab on the spot. The questions increase in difficulty and value as the game progresses. If the contestant reaches their destination without striking out, they can go "double-or-nothing" on a video bonus question.

In the Canadian version of Cash Cab, contestants answer trivia questions for cash prizes while the host, Adam Growe, drives them in a cab around Toronto.
