"Luck" will center on the inner-workings of the horse racing circuit, while highlighting the behind the scenes drama that includes excessive gambling. Hoffman's character Ace Bernstein, is described as "an intelligent, intuitive and tough man who has always been involved with gambling, from bookmaking to money laundering through a casino".
It wasn't one horse that had to be put down, but three.
Should animals get hurt and then be killed just because they are in a TV show? I think not.

Enlightened and Treme also had horrible ratings, but HBO supports them. And they cancelled Bored to Death at the same time.
So Carnivale, Deadwood, Luck. Fuck you HBO. :|

a horse really? so the numbers wasn't the reason?
even tho the show probably was good, i doubt that many people watched it.
It was already renewed for a second season. So the numbers were good.
Luck was renewed after airing only the pilot episode. It didn't start that well (HBO's Luck premiered to just 1.061 million average viewers, and a 0.3 adults 18-49 ratings.) and it quickly dropped to horrible viewership numbers. Here are the numbers for the last Sunday's episode:
Luck (HBO)
-9:02 PM: 0.474 million viewers, 0.14 A18-49
-11:02 PM: 0.223 million viewers, 0.07 A18-49
So I'm pretty sure that the deaths helped HBO in some way. They probably didn't want to cancel an ambitious show with a spectacular cast just because it wasn't doing good in the ratings.

- Do you make a million dollars? Simple question.
- No, sir.
- Go home. Come back tomorrow. Tell me every fucking thing you did between now and then. If I like what I hear, I'll give you a million dollars for the next 12 months that you work for me.
- Doing what?
- That's the first thing you write down. "Before I left here, I asked him a stupid fucking question."
