Based on the James M. Cain novel "Mildred Place," this miniseries will star Kate Winslet, who will play a single mother who goes into the restaurant business and gets involved in a murder.
Dunno about the 1945 movie, but Kate is doing a fantastic job here. If she doesn't win a award, I'm gonna be sad.

I am unsure of the point in the series when it was already made as an Oscar winning movie. Anyone seen both and can compare? I liked the movie, but can't really see Kate Winslet replacing Joan Crawford.

I'll be giving this ago, I do like mini-series a fair bit, and this one is only five or six in duration so will watch all of them back to back :D

Watched Part Two, really, really like it. :) Guy Pearce works very well with Kate. I only don't like her bitch daughter, Veda. I want her to die a very gruesome death.

are there lesbians in it or atleast any explosions? :)
No and no.
Watched episode one and I'm very pleased. It shows the story of a single mother in 1931 struggling to live in times, when women were in a worse situation than men. But not only that, the miniseries also depicts both social and economical situation of the 1930's, though it's quite subtle. Kate Winslet's acting is top notch, as is the whole supporting cast. The level of detail always amazes me with HBO, they can produce almost every scenery like it was really recorder in the beginning of the XX century. I'll leave the second episode for tommorow, I'll enjoy it more in that way.
If you like a compeling, steady story, then give it a go. If you want things exploding and people fucking every five minutes, there's the door. (Imma trollin', I knowz :P)

Gonna watch it in the evening. But I wouldn't be suprised, that most of the ppl here wouldn't watch it, it's a drama show that takes place in 1930s, based on a book from 1941, not everyone's favorite.
pre WW2? mhh i think i will give it a try
