Small facelift + upcoming tweaks and features
To make Next Episode more modern and easier on the eyes, I just implemented some little cosmetic changes:
Header now looks like
(used to look like
) - about time for the Pick a TV Show dropdown to go!
Footer is also updated to looks like
The "add to" and "remove from" watchlist buttons are now a bit more prominent.
Here are the changes that are likely to come - bigger and more about new and clean up of old functionality:
link will be removed. Let me know if you have strong feelings about this.
Friends - you'll be able to add people as friends and be notified when they add/remove shows.
Acquired - optional second type of Episode status (currently, episodes can only be marked as Watched).
I hope you like the update and what's to come. Any feedback, critique and suggestions will be much appreciated!

The manage watch list, I do use it to delete shows I decide I no longer want to watch so I have a clean overview. Will removing them completely from my "In watchlist" be possible in another way?
I know I can use "stop tracking" but that leaves them in the list.
Thanks for the improvements and all the work!

Thank you for all the work you do on this site! I do still wish we could have an Ignore/Skipped button (or its equivalent) to clear episodes or seasons of long-running TV shows from our watchlist/episode list, just to distinguish what was actually watched/downloaded from what was initially skipped. I like the detail and helps when/if I decide to go back and download it at a later date. (Umbrella up now to deflect the storm).

If you searched the show you can remove it from your watchlist that way @eadwine

Ahhhh perfect, found it. Thank you! :) @louiselesley

No! don't remove Manage Watchlist, I need to be able to see my overview of all my shows i'm watching. Also it's the place i'm deleting the show's im not watching anymore. It's pretty annoying to go to the name of the show and delete it manually when it's a big list of show's im stopping all together at once...(which happens alot when new shows start or end due to not having unlimited time)
For the rest great site, i've been using this for years now!

I do like the manage watchlist...
Definitely have strong feelings about the Manage Watchlist. It's a necessary feature of the site.
What's the point of removing it?
Very much looking forward to Acquired, but do keep a C in there as well ;)

Looking good :D

Please KEEp the Watchlist on the Left side of the page !
Its vital and one of the top reasons I use this webpage, especially for those of us watching multiple shows. Please re-consider.
"The "add to" and "remove from" watchlist buttons are now a bit more prominent." looks nice :)
Manage watchlist is a bit important. Please don't remove!
@TeaAndApathy - this will be used VERY rarely by only a few users, but will need huge front and backend modifications to implement. Sorry but I highly doubt it will happen :(
@Ghettoheaven - don't you have an overview of your shows in the Watchlist that is on the homepage and all show pages? And removing shows one by one can't be too hard right? Especially if you're doing it like what, 2 times a year? :)
@ArniVidar - what is necessary about it? I think I shouldn've made it in the first place. It's one click to add or remove a show from its page. Adding/Removing shows in bulk makes sense very rarely (and even then it's fine to just do it from the show page) and is not used by many. Added the C in there :)
@nurse59 - the watchlist on the left will stay. The link in the settings menu for managing the watchlist will go as its functionality was always redundant and very rarely used.
@trueblubloodfanx - why?
I haven't 100% made my mind. Convince me you need this or let me convince you that you don't :) So how often do you guys use it, really?
I don't know if this is related to the update, but the sliders have disappeared and I can't scroll the page (the only way to do this atm is to press the middle mouse button to initiate scroll). This is happening in Opera (works fine in Firefox) and only on the main page (forum pages have sliders).
@redemptor - nope, this is related to you using adblock :)
hm, so the three choices are paying a subscription, dealing with a pop up every time I log in or struggling with adblock turned on? not cool, if someone wants to support the site he should do it willingly
comment # 19 by
This is like saying:
I've been eating free apples from this groceries store for 9 years now. I love them, but now what - there are 3 choices - I either have to pay for apples, barter with the owner or keep stealing them and deal with the consequences? Not cool. If someone wants a free apple, they're entitled to it and only pay (or give something back) if they're willing to!
The metaphor got a bit long and overblown, but you know what I'm saying. Also I didn't see "turning off adblock" in your list of options. If you don't want to support the site through Premium - turning off adblock on Next Episode will solve your problem as well.
Better metaphor might be I can still have a free apple as long as I stand in front of the store's tv and watch a commercial first....

Also having strong feelings about the Manage watchlist...
Just keep in mind that "Manage watchlist" and "Watchlist on the left" have two very different use-cases:
- The Left one is sorted by upcoming episodes, so it's basically a different version of Calendar page. I go there when I want to see what's coming in a few days time.
- "Manage watchlist" on the other hand is a place, where I can simply review all my shows in one place. The left one is no good for that, since it is not alphabetically sorted and not complete (inactive shows hidden). For example I want to check, if I added all CSI series to watchlist - do you want me to browse Left Watchlist? Since it's not sorted by a name, I might miss it easily. And I will certainly not open all the pages of every CSI show. Manage Watchlist works for that, all CSI shows will be in one place.
Another thing is the bulk-removal. I have personally used it several times, since I "untracked" some shows and then forgot about them, and then I removed them all at once in there. Bulk-adding on the other hand is something I cannot imagine using, I guess that can go and will not be missed :-)
But please keep the complete alphabetical list of my shows with remove buttons :-)
Great changes and thanks for keeping the site looking and working great! :)
I gotta agree with everyone else on the Manage Watchlist issue though, for much the same reasons as TheTomCZ above. It would be a pain (and take ages!) if you have to go to each individual show page to remove it, instead of all at once, especially if you tend to 'untrack' shows and forget about them, then periodically do a mass cleanup...
Looks like you're loosing this one Santah - not that I care, I didnt even know it was an option. but now that I know... could be handy.
Btw, not sure if this is related to your changes or not - but I just noticed that I can barely read the font at the top of the forum entries.

I support Settings/Manage watchlist link removal. I've used it maybe few times only since I've registered this account 2 years ago. For those who say that you can't see your entire watchlist click your username and there they are. After that it's easy to open shows you want to remove in separate tabs and do that. It won't kill you to make 2 clicks more than now. Keeping that part of site for santah means spending time to upgrade function used very rarely by most users with every site overhaul/iteration.
Firstly, thank you so much for all you do. I would be lost without this site. Please do not remove the Settings/Manage watchlist. I use this religiously.
Header & Footer - really like these nice and clean
The "add to" and "remove from" watchlist buttons - again nice improvement they can't be missed
The Settings/Manage watchlist link - I'd say remove this feature, its easy enough to visit a site page and remove a show from your watch list, I have used this method since I joined the site and never had any issues.
Friends - I can see the value in this to some users
Acquired - I can see the value in this to some users who download shows
Nice to see the site continues to develop, my lifetime membership is paying off :)

nice nice :D
@santah - After quite some deliberation, I have come to the conclusion that the Manage Watchlist system is nice to have but far from necessary.
I can get most of the same functionality from my Episodes page, when I right-click the shows there and then hit Remove from watchlist from the episode page.
That being said, although I have used it for bulk removal, I've mostly used it for bulk *adding*.
Yes. I've gone through the entire alphabetical list, letter by letter, and added shows to my watchlist that I couldn't remember before I saw their names. Now that I have done that to completion, however, I won't need to do that again. So for me personally, I'm okay with it going.
My question remains though. What's the point of removing the feature? To me, it doesn't seem to be causing anything negative just by being there, available to use for those once or twice a year times that one in twenty users uses it for... bulk management.
Edit: Oh, and I'm absolutely loving the new Watchlist buttons. Makes it MUCH clearer to use them.
Very nice! Think I used Manage watchlist once or twice when I first joined the site so I really won't miss it.
Thanks for improvement!
Dont Delete Watchlist its very usefully. The rest of the site is Awesome..
Please keep the Manage Watchlist. Makes it easy for at-a-glance viewing of all my shows.
Ok, for everyone who wants to keep the Manage Watchlist simply for the watchlist overview - did you know that if you click on your username at the top left on the page, you'll go to your profile page with all your shows listed in alphabetical order?
Is it as useful to you for an at-a-glance overview of your watchlist?
Awesome to hear we'll be able to add our TV clique friends!
I like the changes you made so far, but please keep the Watchlist as it is.

Hi Santah; I've used this site for some time. I'm a frequent if truthful slightly disloyal Premium subscriber.
I think I have an illness that compulsively makes me try other software's/services. Each has merits but what keeps me coming back to Next-Episode is the sheer speed, simplicity and overall correctness of the presented information both website and iOS app.
I really should stop looking around and save myself some time; I will try.
I mention the above in addition to saying I have used the facility you are polling for Users comments - a lot - particularly when quickly adding/checking and removing shows I have attributed to my account. Thats said, it was a little confusing to find it at first; I was expecting to be able to remove shows from the 'click username' view. While you can use the view you mentioned (click Username) it's not as compact and easily 'clickable' as the current watchlist view.
Perhaps you could remove Watchlist whilst also providing the option of a 'condensed' view to the action of clicking the Username; this would remove artwork and much of the text to give a more compact view together with an 'remove'button? I know it's 2 clicks to remove in the current view but if you have 10 shows to action thats 3 clicks per show, 1 to select, 1 to remove and 1 to go backwards to the full list. With a remove button, it's click click click [10 clicks] - RST needs to be avoided :)
When you open a tv show webpage the (button/link) "add to and remove from watchlist" is to heavy. It is all I see like a big red or green flag. I liked it the way it was before, orange text. Or just change the letter color not add extra stuff around it. The website is to white for it. If you want it in your face I am pretty sure there are other areas here where there is an overview to add or remove tv shows. Please make it an option to remove it or change the color or text size.
@ArniVidar - as to why - pretty much what Turwaithion said. I want to make an overhaul of the settings page and tighten it up - visually and functionally, and I don't want to drag kinda useless functionality along
@danio1972 - yes, at that point I'm thinking we're gonna need a replacement for the "manage watchlist" functionality. I have some ideas and will be working on them in the coming days and will present it before removing the old functionality!
@Witchy - I kinda feel the same. Will tweak the "remove" button to be less prominent.
@santah - Fair enough. I was just thinking that leaving it alone would be no bother :)
I couldn't disagree more with Witchy's comment though. The Orange Text link gets utterly lost in the page, and it desperately needed the big button. Makes the page MUCH more user friendly, with the added side benefit of the bigger button making it easier to use on a touchscreen, regardless of my loathing of making all websites into touch-sites.
That being said, the main use of that button is to ADD shows to my list. I very rarely remove them. So if only the Remove button gets a little less prominent it won't matter much to me.
@ArniVidar - yes, left the Add button as it was and tweaked the Remove a little.
Now the contrast between the red button the rest of the page is not so big.
I like using Manage Watchlist, I use it to see A-Z list of all shows on site as well as remove some show I'm no long watching.
Thanks for the color change of the remove button on the tv shows webpages you like to follow. That is much less in youre face :-). My eyes can ignore it now if I want to.
@santah - the list of shows in my profile is too long - too many details for each show makes it not as good as simple overview. On my FullHD display I can fit some 5-6 shows at once, so if I have (and that I have!) dozens of shows in my watch list, it's basically useless for overview.
Btw, tried login via Google - it recognized my e-mail but offered me creation of new profile. Does it test for existing profile with that e-mail? It should.
@TheTomCZ - it doesn't for now. Maybe someday it'll work like you imagine it, but for now - it's too much of a security risk (the email you have registered with is never verified, so anyone could enter anything there and then have it matched with someone else's email from their Google or Facebook login).
The Google and Facebook login are there for users without an existing Next Episode account, though I'll probably add the ability to link an existing account with Facebook or Google.
@santah - Well, there's an easy fix for this. When somebody tries to facebook-log-in and there's already an account with that e-mail, just ask for password for that account and link accounts on success.
@TheTomCZ - what if there are 2 accounts with that email? Only the username on next episode is unique, we don't limit accounts per email. It's not optimal, but that's how next epsiode always worked.
@santah wow, really? That's the problem then, non-unique e-mail... Do you have some stats? It should be interesting to know the number of all accounts and number of e-mail collisions... I guess there will be just a few, and most of them will be just duplicate accounts (like "I forgot the old password, so I made a new account")... My guess is number of duplicities with both accounts active will be pretty much close to zero... So it would not take much work to make e-mail unique, since inactive accounts should be easily detected.
Or, just keep the duplicities, and on facebook-log-in with pre-existing account(s) ask not only for password, but for nickname as well.
But, I have to add, I really love the work you have done here, don't want to seem like some ungrateful jerk, only suggesting more work and not appreciating what you've already done O:-)
About 2% of the accounts have duplicate email.
Now, most of that is probably spam bots, but I'll have to do a ton of manual work in order to sort them out and figure out what is what.
It'll probably happen at some point, as the email not being unique is a big problem indeed.
And yea, will add a mechanism to ask the user for his username/pass once an existing email is detected. It's a great suggestion and you don't seem like an ungrateful jerk :D
Just need to find the time to do it these days and I will!
Great features! Keep up the excellent work :)
@santah - Thanks again for all the great work and good to see you've now introduced email verification as well :)
On another note, seems like you've also just made some changes to how tags appear in Episodes (now displayed under the show name). For this, would it be possible to have an option in settings/Eps page itself to toggle it on and off? The new way is great for quickly checking which shows are not yet tagged and checking existing tags by show, but it also clutters up the page quite a bit and makes it difficult to see which shows have new eps at a glance... Or maybe change the formatting so the tags line is smaller/less prevalent under the show name?
