The show follows Tony as a man devastated by the abduction of his young son, Oliver, during a family vacation in France. He becomes a man obsessed, unable to accept that his child may be dead and spends years searching for him.
It is wartime, and the infantry battalion of which Captain Charles Ryder is a company commander, is transferred from a site near Glasgow to a location further south. Traveling in a troop train, Ryder and his fellow officers wonder where they are going-overseas?
