Masada
In this Emmy Award-winning dramatization of historical events, Peter O'Toole stars as the Roman general tasked with crushing a group of Jewish rebels who have sought refuge on Masada, a desert fortress, in A.D. 72. Despite superior numbers and supplies, the Romans find themselves endlessly frustrated in their attempts to thwart the rebels' last stand. The star-studded cast also includes Peter Strauss, Barbara Carrera and Anthony Quayle.
Shogun (1980)
This legendary mini-series in based on the novel of James Clavell. It follows the journey of John Blackthorne from Britain who shipwrecked with his Dutch crew off the coast of feudal Japan. Initially, he is shocked by the local customs but he begins to assimilate as he learns more about Japanese culture. Originally, Shogun was aired in five parts. It was criticized for breaking taboos of nudity and violence but it also received critical acclaim. The original version was cut down to a theatrical release of 151 min, and later into six two-hour episodes.
Danger UXB
Danger UXB was a 1979 British ITV television series about a squad of Royal Engineers with the duty of defusing unexploded ordnance in England during the Blitz in World War II.
It starred Anthony Andrews as Lieutenant Brian Ash, a newly commissioned officer assigned to 347 Section of 97 Tunneling Company, Royal Engineers, which has been assigned to explosive ordnance disposal duties. Maurice Ro?ves played Sergeant James, his section sergeant. Naturally, the series primarily featured military storylines, but there was a strong and touching romantic thread provided by Susan Mount (Judy Geeson), with whom Ash falls in love.
The programme was titled and partly based on the the memoirs of Major A. B. Hartley, M.B.E, RE, Unexploded Bomb, the UXB standing-for UneXploded Bomb. The series was filmed in 1978 in and around the Clapham/Streatham/Tooting area of London.
The program appeared on U.S. television on PBS as part of Masterpiece Theatre from 1980 to 1981.
