The 4th installment of Law & Order created by Law & Order's mastermind Dick Wolf, Trial by Jury takes a hard look at the judicial part of a case, and the lawyers and people involved during a trial.

The show follows a crime, usually adapted from current headlines, from two separate vantage points. The first half of the show concentrates on the investigation of the crime by the police, the second half follows the prosecution of the crime in court.

Somewhat rough-around-the-edges private eye Harry McGraw is street-bred and street-wise. Recently widowed criminal lawyer Ellie Maginnis is from one of Bostons better families. McGraw is relatively unschooled; Ellie is a model of civility and breeding.

In 2086, two peaceful aliens journey to Earth seeking help. In return for Earth's assistance, the aliens share the plans for the planet's first hyperdrive, allowing mankind to open the doors to the stars. With this new technology in hand, a team of unique individuals are assembled to protect Earth and its allies.
