The series tells the story of a bustling and glamorous five star hotel at the centre of London society and a world at war.The drama, set in 1940, shows London life through the prism of war and the impact it has on families, politics, relationships and work across every social strata - set to a soundtrack of the music of the era.

Michelle Collins stars as Abby Wallace, a mother of two who moves her family from the inner city to the small village of Ronansay in Scotland. The local council, fearing the closure of its school due to a lack of pupils, places an ad for families to move to the area. Being unmarried, Abby persuades her friend Kenny Marsh (Paul Kaye) to pose as her husband.

Carter, who used to be a policeman, now works as a private investigator. Then suddenly he disappears. His wife searches for clues in his office, but the only thing she finds is... another wife. The two women decide to join forces.
