The show tells the story of Dexter Procter, a 10-year-old paediatrician and the world's youngest-ever doctor trying to solve - frequently disgusting - medical mysteries, save his job, and find his place in the world. Eagle-Service is making his screen debut in the role. Serafinowicz plays Dr Drake, a jealous colleague who can't stand the idea of a child working as a doctor and spends every waking second attempting to have Dexter fired.

Flight attendant Cassandra Bowden wakes in her hotel room hungover from the night before in Dubai with a dead body lying next to her. Afraid to call the police, she continues her morning as if nothing happened, joining the other flight attendants and pilots traveling to the airport. In New York, she is met by FBI agents who question her about her recent layover in Dubai. Still unable to piece the night together, she begins to wonder if she could be the killer.

The show revolved around the life of American Clare Pettengill, who, at the start of the series, had recently arrived in Glasgow, Scotland. She starts up a book club to try to find friends with similar interests. Those whom she encounters are not what she expected; her new group consists of a drug-addled, egotistical postgraduate student (and subsequently his neurotic and ever-worrying brother), an easy-going disabled man who aims to be a writer, three discontented footballers' wives, and a straggler who hides his homosexuality with an obsession for football. All of the members are brought together not so much by the books that they read (if they read the book at all), but by their own longings for companionship, and their ambitions to better their lives.
