The Academy City on the water, Rikka (otherwise known as Asterisk) is the world's largest stage for the integrated battle entertainment, "Star Wars Festival." The young boys and girls of the "Starpulse Generation" belonging to the six academies made their wishes with Shining Armaments in their hands, vying for supremacy-Amagiri Ayato is one of them. Ayato arrived at Rikka at the invitation of the Student Council President of the Seidoukan Academy, Claudia, and right after that he incurred the wrath of the "Petalblaze Witch" Julis, and ended up having to duel her.

When people are marked to die, a small grey line, that is invisible to everyone, appears around their neck. As time goes on, the line gets darker and darker till it is black, then the person will die. Kita Michiru posses the ability to see these lines.

The story is set on the "Planet of Endless Illusion", a place where rogues of all sorts gather. The protagonist, Van, travels the world searching for a man with a clawed right hand. He is joined by several other travelers along the way, each linked to the clawed man by a personal loss.

They're the Get Backers, and they live by a simple motto: If it was taken, we'll get it back. Their success rate is 100%. They may have no luck with money, but they always come through on a job, no matter how small. Ban and Ginji are no ordinary retrieval service though. With Ginji's ability to generate lightning and Ban's Jagan Eye and 200kg force grip, they'll take on any job, from retrieving stuffed toys to fine art to lost memories. If the GetBackers say they'll get it back, they will!
