"The Glades" follows Jim Longworth, an attractive, brilliant, yet hard to get along with homicide detective from Chicago who gets shot by his captain after being wrongfully accused of sleeping with his wife.

They cancel shows when they don't bring in enough money. Quality is not a factor, neither is ending a story. To networks, tv shows are just filler between commercials.
I think the writers are a bit to blame themselves too. Any show can get cancelled, if they don't get enough eyeballs to watch the commercials. Of course they should leave openings to a new season, new plot twists, etc. But they also should round of the story a bit, so it can stand on its own.
Not every tv station does that and I'm not talking only about cable... look at NBC and Hannibal with its dreadful ratings (plus it's not a major hit in other countries or in services like Hulu or Netflix so NBC is also not making any serious money that way).
Besides it's not like they always wake up a month before the planned finale to figure out they're losing money making the show... they should at least have a backup plan for a different storyline of the final episode. :/ Sure, you can always ignore the fans of the show, but there's a chance that some of them won't tune in to watch new shows from the same tv station (that's what I do with CBS and Person of Interest is the only exception ;)).

Looks like A&E likes cancelling shows when it's not expected and when the writers can't prepare for it. They did the same thing with Breakout Kings.
A&E has announced that The Glades will indeed be returning for a fourth season.
Production on the new season will begin this fall, and the premiere will be sometime next year.
