On the alien world of Mer, a planet of turbulent seas and scattered small islands, a poisonous substance called Dark Water threatens to destroy everything it touches. The only defense the people of Mer have against the Dark Water are the mystical 13 Treasures of Rule, scattered and hidden across Mer.
Ren, a seventeen-year-old orphan, discovers that he is not only the lost prince of the island of Octopon, but that he is destined to rediscover the 13 Treasures and use them to save Mer from the Dark Water. Armed with a magical compass and his father's sword, Ren and his crew; Ioz the pirate, Niddler the monkeybird and the ever resourceful Tula, set out to find the Treasures.
But the motley crew are not the only people looking for the Treasures and hunting them down proves to be a race against the pirate King Bloth, who will do anything to get his hands on the Treasures.
