Interesting question - can't say - i haven't read the books... didn't even consider that this is true to the books :D
Maybe you can have a look and tell us? I am curios.

The author seems to confirm that the show is more-or-less close to the books:

https://screenrant.com/the-spiderwick-chronicles-show-authors-holly-black-tony-diterlizzi/
- Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi were thrilled to get to collaborate with Aron Eli Coleite for The Spiderwick Chronicles show adaptation.
- The authors confirmed that there have been some changes made from the source material, but were all made in respect to their themes in the books and for updating it for a modern audience.

... makes me wonder why the show felt so "torn" and "jumping about", as if 2 script-writers with very different ideas were fusing their views, focus and styles into one show...?

OK, but does the series follow the books?

Sorry to inform you - i am in E04 and it seems the "real action" does NOT come, they do NOT stick to the movie...

It keeps being stuck in the "real-world"-stuff, and its really annoying - it feels more of a "not so well made" teenie-show from CW? And the "Ogre" is a charming hoaxing hustler-seducer?
... and so much lying, hate and anger, WTF?!

... nothing in sight regarding a magical fairy-world of blissful horrifying wonderfulness like in the movie, not sure i'll finish this one, very disappointing - but maybe 2nd half gets better?

Its "ok", but nothing like the movie - if you liked Charmed Remake or maybe Once Upon a Time you might like this one too

PS:
sadly it gets much much worse in E07+, script went totally dope...
hard spoiler:
.... mushroom-slave-ZOMBIES!? WTF?!?!?!
... and do NOT expect creatures, there's only a rather unadorable Thimbletack and a few seconds of firefly fairies
Seems there was no CGI or special-effect budget :O

this defiantly is no recommendation!

I am just starting to watch, and after E01 - i mostly like what i am seeing :)

How does it start? (mini Spoiler E01)

So the Ogre Mulgarath is not eaten & digested, but is the villain again?
Hmm - the myriad of possibilities, and they stick with the Ogre - its a bit disappointing but ok...

Yea, 1 mom + 3 kids, one girl, 2 male twins - sound familiar?
The artist of the twins has his 1st invisible "encounter" just 18 min into the E01 :-) Yeas, very familiar!
Oh the girl ... she does fencing... mymy - again so familiar :D
And yes - the kids are at each others throat, real anger, constant blame - my stuff, your stuff, your crazy, your fault, argue here argue there...
And yes - we see the "poking a hole into the wall" - but this time its mom herself ... and big time!
And another yes, we see live writing on a dusty mirror :)

The house got a really nice update and looks really really great - we expect loooots of secrets here!

So the beginning did not really sit so well with me, but it was ok - "real"-world stuff wasn't the best in the movie either, and i still love it :D

I REALLY did not like all that bickering in the movie, and i do not like it here - hopefully it stops when the real "action" begins - like in the movie...

But nonetheless, i get a REALLY good vibe here - the show really really well made so far, the house, the technics, the camera, the light, sound - atmosphere really good!
They seem to very intensely follow the movie, which is also fine by me!

So i am really exited to see what comes next! This can be a real gem, will it be?

Based on the best-selling novels by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black.
The Spiderwick Chronicles is a modern coming-of-age story combined with a fantasy adventure.

The Grace family moves from Brooklyn, New York, to their ancestral home in Henson, Michigan, the Spiderwick Estate. Helen makes the move with her 15-year-old fraternal twin boys, Jared and Simon, and her older daughter, Mallory. Shortly after moving to the Spiderwick Estate Jared discovers a boggart and realizes that magical creatures are real! The only one to believe him is his great-aunt Lucinda who implores Jared to find the pages of her father's field guide to magical creatures and protect them from the murderous Ogre, Mulgarath.
