Lodge 49 is a modern fable set in Long Beach. It centers on Dud, a deadbeat but charming ex-surfer who joins a fraternal order hoping to reclaim the simple, happy lifestyle he lost when his father died. Through the Lodge and his newfound connection with the other members, Dud will come to find the missing sense of purpose in his life and confront his deepest fears and greatest hopes. Other key characters in the series include Liz Dudley, Dud's twin sister and Ernie Fontaine, a middle-aged African American and long-time lodge member who welcomes him into this mysterious new world.
i did not like the show because it did not go anywhere.
it could be called "dud walks around avoiding life, and nothing really happens"
which would be fine if there were interesting characters that evolved in interesting ways.
or even if the characters lives fell apart because of their poor choices
but in the 7 episodes i watched before giving up
no one got worse or better.
and the only interesting thing that happened ,was at the lodge
and 90% of the lodge members do really nothing about it.
(i thought that was the kick off, but nope it was not)
as a person dirk genty was an useless idiot, and i hated everything about him,
except his never say quit attitude. the sidekick (hobbit) was even worse as a human.
but dirk was also "gifted" and everything works out for him in unusual ways.
( which made his actions proper since things worked out in a good way,
so maybe i dislike characters more who do the wrong things over and over
because they refuse to see the damage previous wrong things cause)
lots of interesting things happened around dirk which was the show.
they evolved as the show went on. learned and tried to do better.
dirk tried to be a better person by the end of the first season.
lodge 49 is unusual as nothing happens..
if you found the characters and story good, fine every body is different in their likes
i know i have liked some pretty useless shows over the years for no good reason
( other then maybe i relate to them or their circumstances, maybe their attitude)
i might have liked it if the sister was the lead, as she was far more interesting.
her struggles to pay her debt, her avoidance of relationships and responsibility of a promotion.
what dud was doing at the lodge, or even earnie who thought the captain could save him
was a show about nothing.. and a very slow burn at that. so slow the fire was out.
for me at least.
as i get older i have less interest in the lovable "wastrel" type character.
the good natured drunk, addict, wastrel who damages everything around
them and refuses to change, refuses to see the harm they cause.
less interest for shows that dont know where they are going or how to get anywhere.
and i am learning to disklike the series where everything is prefect at the start of every show
and everything is fixed and prefect again before the next story starts ( on a 2-3 show arc out of 10-20 episodes)
now this show had a lot of things going for it.
good actors. the idea of the lodge of alchemists that need revitalizing, a down and out character that wants to make something of himself. strong support system for the main lead. power struggle in the lodge. possible relationship dynamics between leads old world and lodge world. there is lots there to work with, the story could go anywhere...
but i did not see it go anywhere at all after 7-45 minute episodes...
after reading the mess that was "the sword of truth" series i can no longer reinvest in things that just are failing over and over all the time.
those are hours gone from my life never to return....
( and we never learned who owned the ring dud found in the first episode, that annoyed me)

but with a 2020's homeless drunk wasted vibe where when the world does not provide,
you can steal and sponge off others as the moral of the story...
i found nothing redeeming in the show.
So you don't like the show because you don't like the character and his actions?
Sure, having the main character bein likeable is the "core" for most good stories...but then again, you asked for "unusual" tv shows :)
Your main example was Dirk Gently, well as many problems you have with Dud as a character I have with Dirk Gently. Did not like him at all, but still enjoyed the show.

I love this show - or better said Season 1. Season 2 was ok but lost something.
Especially the moments when Dud reminisces about the past and his father. The sadness he displays there, great acting by Wyatt Russell.
When he became part of the Lodge and tells his story...that was peak television. The writing and acting is just so good.
You could say a lot of people have it a lot worse than Dud, but this show manages to portray personal struggle (and how it differs for every single person) better than I have seen in most other shows.
That made this a 10/10 show for me.

i don't think even drugs could make this show interesting enough to watch.
