This eight-episode, hourlong historical drama series is adapted from Bernard Cornwell's best-selling novels, The Saxon Stories by writer Stephen Butchard.
The new movie is good, but really felt like it should've been a full season. I'm generally the one griping about shows dragging and lack of editing and plot being stretched out but this one felt like it left plenty of meat on the bone.
Agreed. Could have been a full season, enough padding for a nice story arc was certainly available. The movie felt a bit rushed. But anyway, the final scene is for me one of the best ways to finally close with a series. Definitive but also vague enough. Made me whole after a disappointing 5th season.
Inviting all those characters back into Odin's hall was a nice touch and Uhtred on the fence between the real world and Valhalla... loved it!

To have made Uthred an oap would have made the show a comedy. You can imagine the fight sequences as they all amble along with crutches.
A battle hardened Viking, erm Saxon, warrior in his end 50s wouldn't necessarily be a grandpa on crutches.... as also demonstrated well enough by e.g. Constantin. It is not the main thing, but puts me off as something which breaks immersion and story telling... the main thing why I won't rate this season that high way that I felt a lot of story arcs were quite rushed and some characters just killed without due respect to their role in the show over the years... like Hæsten or Osferth. Also Brida's end could have been a bit better.... And also the whole scheming evil Æthelhelm story did'nt convince me
But well, like said... okay season to wrap it all up, but for me far from the best within the series.

In my opinion the last season was rather disappointing most of the time. Everything felt a bit lazy written(*), rushed and all over the place... it had a couple of strong moments but most of the time I had a feeling the writers just had to "wrap up". Also maybe since the visuals did not really support how much time has passed. Uthred should have been around 60, but they didn't even care to make him look a bit aged and worn. Same for couple of other key characters.
It is simple things like this which kind of make the difference between a truly great show and "just alright"
Still enjoyed Last Kingdom series, worth revisiting in a few years.

So it is over. Season 5 was a great season and the final eps wound it all up nicely as you might expect.
One of the geat tv series? Though I could do without being reminded "That destiny is all"
( I couldn't find an entry for this series was suprised at that, if I am wrong sorry)
