Dan and Carla are at a cross-roads. Dan has been recently made redundant, while Carla is wondering whether this is all she can expect from life. Add their age gap to the mix, and the re-emergence onto the scene of Carla's ex-girlfriend Maya, and it's no wonder that they're feeling stuck.

Black Books is a British sitcom about a misanthropic bookshop owner, Bernard Black, who is rude to his customers and doesn't like selling books. Bernard's assistant, Manny, tries to keep the shop running smoothly, while his friend Fran tries to get him to socialize more. The show is full of dark humor and absurd situations.

Following their marriage, Ian and Lisa move back to the village where she grew up, a village still dominated by her family. In order to try to fit in, Ian takes a job as the village photographer, a profession for which he is not really cut out.
